Name:Melissa
Alias:Simpsons, Kwyjibo, Kwejeebo, Mailissa
Who is affected?Windows 95, 98, NT users using Word 97 or 2000 and using Outlook 97 or 98 e-mail client. Does not spread with Word 95 or Outlook Explorer.
What does it do?Slows and/or crashes mail servers. Activates if executed when the minutes of the hour match the day of the month. Inserts the Simpsons quote "Twenty-two points, plus triple-word score, plus fifty points for using all my letters. Game's over. I'm outta here."
How is it spread?Through e-mail in Microsoft Word documents. Self-replicates and automatically e-mails everyone in the user's address book.
What to look for:An e-mail message that says "Here is that document you asked for...don't show it to anyone else ;-)"

Name:Melissa U variant
Who is affected?Windows 95, 98, NT users using Word 97 or 2000 and using Outlook 97 or 98 e-mail client. Does not spread with Word 95 or Outlook Explorer.
What does it do?Deletes some system files. Activates when an infected document is opened. An infected document will contain the following text. ">>>>>Please Check Outlook Inbox Mail<<<<<"
How is it spread?Through e-mail in Microsoft Word documents. Self-replicates and automatically e-mails the first four people in the user's address book.
What to look for:An e-mail message with "pictures" in the subject line and "what's up ?" for the body of the message.

Name:Melissa V variant
Who is affected?Windows 95, 98, NT users using Word 97 or 2000 and using Outlook 97 or 98 e-mail client. Does not spread with Word 95 or Outlook Explorer.
What does it do?Attempts to delete files and mapped drives alphabetically by drive letter. Activates when the attached infected document is opened. The document contains nothing in the body.
How is it spread?Through e-mail in Microsoft Word documents. Self-replicates and automatically e-mails the first 40 people in the user's address book.
What to look for:An e-mail message with "my pictures" in the subject line and nothing in the body of the message. When run, a messagebox will display the message "Please Check Your OutLook Inbox E-Mail!" When you click ok the following message is displayed in the open document "Hint: Get Norton 2000 not McAfee 4.02"
